Rough night and a missed gym session…

custom_figure_pain_spot_15571Well wouldn’t you know it, time for a holiday and I fall apart. A tough gym session during the week targeting the legs, then add in a pinch of rugby and the inevitable result? Pain, lots of it.

My right knee has started to go pop when I walk, and last night that meant little sleep and a cocktail of pain killers to get through the night. The ice pack certainly did help. The upset of this? One grumpy stephen and missed saturday morning session.

Additionally, it doesn’t look great for Sunday’s kickboxercise either. Bugger. I shall see what support I can give it for the day along with some rest.

A Goal & Tyres

Hi All,

So at the weekend, I said I needed a goal, and by accident, I’ve gone and found one. Whilst at the gym, I thought they look good scales so I duely paid £1 to go on them. Out pops a receipt and it made for interesting reading. There was a new number of there I’ve not seen before.


No it doesnt take a genius to wokr out where I would be on that little picture and its off far to one side, in the margin of your screen. According to the receipt in front of me 39.2% The same receipt also says Poor => 32.1

So there is the target, for this time round that % has to come down! With no science or idea why I’ve guessed lets do 5%…. interesting and an update in 4 weeks then guys.

custom_clock_hands_16007That leads nicely onto tonight’s gym session, and something I always enjoy – Tyre flipping. In partners, 6 minutes AMRAP and record the number for slam balls 9kg, tyre flips, rowing (calories burned) then kettle bell swings. Total it up and off you go. As there was an odd number, we took a 3rd person and it meant some more down time, fear not we deployed the plank!

And There Is Something I Need To Do Today…



And that is decide upon a goal……..


The  previous plan was to be fitter and healthier for my holiday and that now seems like a distant memory. So what is the goal to be for this 6 weeks…. (and we are already a week down!) I suspect being on holiday has slowed me down here, but I can live with that!


The main goal needs some thoughts but along the way:

  • Time to nail the burpee
  • Improve skipping efficiency
  • Continue with the 20kg kettle
  • Move up the press up difficulty

And that’s my starter……

It has been a while, so a mixed post this one…. and a long one!

Hello All,

When I look back I’ve been quite good (well by my standards) at keeping the blog up-to-date. Of course, there are gaps but its not too bad. However, I got a question asking why I wasn’t blogging, and in fairness, I’d been busy, tired, and a bit meh. However, it is good to write things down from time to time. So in no particular order:

world_map_on_suitcase_400_clr_11211I am just back from a truly great holiday in Madeira. Quinta Do Lorde if you are interested a lovely recent resort built around a marina. All inclusive wasn’t cheap but it was worth every penny in all fairness. 3 meals a day, plus some snacks, and drink between 11 and midnight. Being on my own, the idea was rest and peace and quiet. Mission achieved. It was so good the main pool over three levels was often quiet so no one went up there so it was a bit like having my own pool.

I would go back at the drop of a hat, and indeed a sun hat was needed.


The return from holiday leads us nicely onto Fitness Academy (or boot camp if you prefer). The plan here was to stop for this cycle enjoy my holiday then come back. However, a change in the schedule meant I wasnt going to miss many sessions rather than the week and a half I had anticipated. As such I’ve re-signed up again for another cycle. Sadly I did miss the fitness test (yeeeee haaa) but I decided to give it my all this. Lets see what happens. [Note I missed Friday as I slept in!] This mornings session was really busy for a saturday with 29 people there I believe – partner workout – Swing when you are winning. One person kettle bell (20kg) whilst the other did get up, burpee, plan builder. 6 rounds each….

The finisher was a 5 minute AMRAP for 10 slams 20 pressup 30 slams. Ouch



Next up is the new gym – xercise4less which is newly opened in North shields. Having joined up in April (!) and it finally opens now…. A big former warehouse as it were converted to 400 stations of gym work. I tweeted the picture on the left, as I was about to go in to battle with the ropes. My god do they hurt. Its not a replacement for the fitness academy, but when I am stuck at work, it allows an alternative location to maintain stuff.

I did my induction which also had no hard sell which was greart and then did a quick round of exercise trying out some bits and pieces.



Not HAL no its the Tefal Optigril. Having replaced George Foreman the new grill is working out well. I’ve been adventurous with marinated chicken, then burger, then pork loin…. its been a great purchase. To help out care of amazon, a new sponge and spatula arrived today as I dont want to ruin the surface.

Well worth a look if you need a grill or are thinking about upgrading from a GF Grill.




Tomorrow is return to the Gym for Kickboxercise which is a technique based class rather than jump around. Cross between boxing, thai boxing and MMA. Its good fun. I do however keep skinning my knuckles so I need some extra padding there.





I don’t think we will comment on work other than back to it, recruitment in flow and changes are coming.

Fitness test – round 2…

Hi everyone,

So when I started the bootcamp/fitness academy it started with a fitness test. An unexpected test, but I made it. Some of them simple enough, others I had no idea about.


Above you can see the before and after as it were… and you will see improvements across the board. Some more than others, but improvements. Those with smaller upgrades the lack of core still is the issue, and I may need to look to further help for this.

It doesnt really tell the whole story mind you, as for example, the press up 21 to 34 0 good. But the bigger part is the increase in quality. A press up now,can be planked on toes, or knees and bent. But again, the arm and core press goes down to nose to floor, so the quality is way better.

The mountain climber needs a check, as I’ve no idea what was going on. The less of a gut helps and indeed, we did climbers during the week, so the data does stack up.

The burpee needs work, but most sessions I opt for the full extension jump but for this test, I did down one leg other leg and back up. Not great but better. Thats my target for next time.


tooth extraction…

cracked_tooth_400_clr_14433Oh well the broken tooth has finally left me with a visit to the Dentist this morninig. The acutal process was relatively painless in all fairness, but the aftermath, as in the bleeding has been unpleasent.

It got to the stage, I even ended up taking some painkillers to try to make it better.

Lunch turned into a disapointing Muller Light as the face wasnt up to anything else

Bad times.



Early Saturday – Again!

exercise_ball_squat_800_clr_8166So another early start even if I did cut it fine to the gym. A couple of killers this morning, with my lack of core making something hard, almost well impossible. Ab Grabs with medicine ball was particularly hard! I also found plank builder hard on my arms, but thats a weight pressure ratio issue!

Now – time to shower, breakfast and then shopping….
